I looked at the drawing and thought the same as Vic, I still can't understand why the relay is not fed from the other side of the charge light. I would be interested to hear the reason.

It's a long story but the short version is that the alternator puts out 12V on the indicator light pin as soon as the ignition switch is turned to the 'run' position. Thus the 'charge' lamp never actually lights.
The alternator has been back to Beta and came back as being OK. Lots of discussion with Beta and a thread on here several years back all failed to diagnose the problem. I have also heard of others with the same symptoms.
I've learned to live with it.
