I've tried to find an alternative to the Volvo Penta Engine Fuel Filter fitted to my MD22 without success - non of the normal FRAM and other sites seem to list it.

Part number is Volvo Penta 3840335

Anybody have any sugestions - and should I even be thinking of getting a pattern part instead of Volvo Penta

Thanks

Kevin

I think you are right.
There is no reason to pay the disproportionated Volvo prices!
The scenario is the following.
First of all Volvo dont manufacture filters, neither oil filters nor fuel filters.
They buy its excellent filters from some leading manufactures.
Here in South America you can get MANN filters, also Bosch filters and other fiorst class high quality leading brands.
Imagine that you own a new Mercades. When its time to change oil and fuel filters do you insist in buying Merces filters? You rely on one excellent brand like Mann for example.
Here the original volvo filters are ten times more expensive than excellent equivalent Mann, Bosch, ACD Delco, etc. filters.
Take your original VP filters to a filter shop and look for te equivalent filters (only leading brands)
Some cheap oil filters (which I dont recommend) have not the internal valves of original VP filters.Pay atention to internal valves.

Suerte!

+1 for these folks. Just enter the Volvo part number and it'll take you straight to the filter you need. Fraction of the cost of the Volvo branded bit and does the same job. I took a Volvo one to bits to compare it to the one I got from these folks. Couldn't spot any differences at all other than the price and paint job.

OK, seems worth a try. But is the particulate filter the same gauge?

We have a TMD22A and use Mann WK842 (Fuel Filter) and Mann 920/11 (Oil Filter). Seem to be well made and have never had any problems with either (famous last words!). Hope this helps.

As said Keypart sell them. As an aside and a warning when we bought our boat on board were some oil filters that weren't Volvo, I think they were Fram, they didn''t have a relief valve. Having seen that I always bought original filters both fuel and oil.

The same goes for the IMPELLERS. Volvo rip off prices. We have never fitted any Volvo spares. Always an alternative supplier.

I always fit alternative filters without a concern.... however where do you source alternative impellers? and belts?

Caught a cold buying alternative impellers.
When the old one failed at sea i suddenly found the alternatives did not quite fit.
Looked the same when i held it against the Volvo one
Fortunately i had. Volvo one as well

Re the engine filter. I use new holland & petters ones. My volvo is, after all, based on a petters block

Sorry but at the moment I cannot find any of the boxes that had the impellers in. If I remember I got them in a chandelry. Took the original Volvo spare and compared.

if I come across them will report back

I have a Volvo MD2020 and according to my notes the last impellor I bought was a Jabsco 673-0001K

Last year I bought non-Volvo fuel and oil filters plus impellor from Yacht Boat parts. http://www.yachtboatparts.com/engines-and-spares-58-c.asp

They sell both genuine Volvo and substitute items, the latter of course at a fraction of the price of the former. So far so good.
