Collected my item today (see post 10). Well pleased.
Hi Aussi
I wanted to have something different from any other site and that not an easy thing to do. I have structured it in size of boat i.e. supper yacht +100ft (big boat gear), cruising -100ft with keel (general boat gear), Classic (old boat gear) etc. As the site gets bigger this should help to split things up a bit but I can see how it seems a bit much now. I might be wrong!
We only have a small amount of listers on the site at the moment so yes there are some categories that are empty and I can assure you this looked worse a year ago. Come back next year and I am sure we will have more filled. Mo Co-Founder JBS

It's really good that you have spent time to respond directly here, that's much appreciated. I definitely understand the complexities (and agonisation) over setting up good category hierarchies for e-commerce and library sites, it can be a difficult task and in my experience it's almost never possible to get it perfect first time. I can definitely see the logic behind your choices, and of course ultimately it's your decision, but it might be worth considering an interim plan while the site is growing, to keep the category structure simple and effective - then you can always extend it in future.I wanted to have something different from any other site and that not an easy thing to do.
