All I want is a whistling kettle.

Thank you Sarabande I would never have thought of looking on the internet:)

I am now on my third mute kettle, so I thought the the collective wisdom and experience of the forum would point me in the right direction.

You could go to a chandlery and buy one or you could go to a camping shop and buy the same thing for less. Failing that I have a whistling kettle that hasn't been used for a while..........

Indeed you could, but you wouldn't know (as I, and I suspect Vara, didn't) until you tried it that the whistle was barely audible or only lasted half a season.

I bought one from Wilkinsons Because it has a folding handle. But it doesn't whistle, it sounds like some kind of alarm and seems to be able to project it's noise as if it is coming from outside, so we tend to ignore it.

The last try has gone mute, cabin filled with steam.

Ideally an ear shattering blast.

Suggestions?

I wish you luck. Our experience with them is that they are either too quiet or the whistles fail or break off

If you can find the old fashioned type where the whistle pulls off to fill then go for it.

If you find a good one please post the details

If buying in the real world (as opposed to t'internet) you can always blow into a removeable whistle to test it before buying.

There's a good selection of whistling kettles in Welsh Hardware shops like Stemar in Caernarfon. Anywhere where there are plenty of solid fuel stoves, there should be a good supply of whisting kettles.

Harder than you think to find the perfect kettle- I have my perfect one but have been trying to source another for when it finally gives up the ghost. It's perfect for me because it can be used totally one=handed, great for at sea; no bits to get lost- no lid, fills through the wide spout, the whistle swivels to one side via a lever on top of the handle, its got quite a solid base and boils quickly. The whistle is extremely loud.
Trouble is,it came with my previous boat, and despite looking long and hard, I've found nothing to match it.

ps when testing kettle whistles by blowing in to them, always do it when the kettle is cold. I wonder how I know this....

Had same problem in 1998. Looked every where but found a perfect kettle, heavy bottom, attached whistle, one hand action etc at.......

Calor gas stand at SIBS. Still going strong, 50,000 miles later.

Have to agree boil water on gas at home, and a decent kettle is hard to find..

We go one of these as2nd effort 3 years ago. Sadly seems none sells them any more?

The one on the boat, that is a family aire loom passed down from mother.. S/S big flat bottom, single handed opening... Something like this.

Le Creuset do a whistling kettle which is excellent quality and very loud. Whether you're willing to spend that much on a kettle or not is another matter. There are discount stores in Swindon and Portsmouth but still looking at £50
