Aldi DAB rechargeable radio quick review

Hi All

Anyone need a FM/DAB rechargeable portable for £15?

I've just come home with one which can migrate between boat and camper.

I had one from Ebay which ate AA batteries. This can be charged from a USB outlet and works when plugged in as well.

It has some good volume for dry cockpit use even when motoring.

How do you find the reception on it? I could do to get something that can cope with the weak signal up here- and that's normal AM, as far as I am aware DAB is as common as unicorn droppings around here.

I'm heading you way next season but in case you can't wait, I'm quite happy with it so far, It scanned and found 30+ channels (in Derbyshire ) I've only just unpacked it, I'm going to try it in the car and see how long the battery lasts between charges.

I've kept the receipt, 60 day/three year warranty

Update #2...
There is no sleep feature and it uses power when shut down unless the fiddly little switch on the rear is used. I had left it on overnight and it was dead this morning, no surprise and rechargeable, so hey ho.
Good point is that it remembered my settings and presets when I reconnected a USB lead.

So you have a measure of how long it lasts on once charge yet?

I'm thinking of one for the car so it would need to last at least 8 hours on a charge (or have to rig up an in car USB charger for it)

Sensibly they're making no pretence that there's anything worth listening to in stereo.

Bumph says 6/10h depending on volume. I gave this one an hour charge while using in today then unplugged, still going 2/3 hrs later.
I have micro usbs outlets all over car/boat/camper so easy..

I presume the headphone socket is stereo?

Just got one today.

Mine was actually faulty, it wouldn't play from it's internal speaker but worked via the headphones. So I took the back off and had a look and the speaker connector had a cracked track on the pcb. 5 minutes with the soldering iron and it's working, a lot easier than a 50 mile round trip to get it replaced.

Inside is what looks like two 2/3AA size nicad battery cells.

Pretty good for £15

when connected to the USB speakers via the earphone socket it makes a splendid sound and will run off two USB socketys on the 12 volt cigar lighter

Over the years I have repaired lots of stuff that should have been repaired under warranty.

Had this come from Lidl, then it would have gone back as they are only 3 miles away and I go there often. But this was from Aldi, and that's 25 miles away and I don't go there very often, so it was either a 50 mile round trip just to get it replaced, or at least have a look and see if it's an easy fix.

Before I go and buy one of these I wonder if someone might try leaving it switched on in FM mode overnight please. A lot of the cheaper DAB radios the processor is running even when its in FM mode and batteries get hammered anyway. If one of these is running happily after a night on FM that'll be a good sign ( I listen to more FM than DAB when I have both on a radio). cheers in advance.
