I have been using one of their rechargeable Nicad small battery powered drills for on and off four years. Irregular use on and off the boat. It has always retained a good charge when not in use. Mixture of drilling wood stainless and GRP also using holesaws up to 75mm dia. Very small battery so really only useful for a 5 min job but quick to recharge (tea break time). The only problem was corrosion in the finger switch which was sorted with using contact cleaner and protection with grease. It would have helped if I had not stored it in a damp cockpit locker!

I have also had a similar experience with Screwfix branded Erbaur with both drill,impact driver and jig saw. All have been worked very hard ,excellent battery and reliability performance but not on the boat or stored in a salty damp environment!

Aldi seem to have replaced the Workzone range with Ferrex, one if not both have Samsung cells in the battery packs and on-line reports on battery life seem good. Advantage of Aldi or Lidl over Screwfix own brands is the far longer warranty period.

As an aside - have Aldi ever had a battery angle grinder, I've never seen one in Oz but Aldi have virtually every other power tool you could possibly want (and many you might never need) - except the angle grinder (at least here).

This is the beastie, but from LIDL....

I do have other 20V batteries, for other tools of the same marque.

I have an Aldi drill/screwdriver which I keep on the boat .
It doesn't get heavy use . GRP and wood doesn't take much drilling. I have never completely drained the battery and put it on charge only very occasionally .
I think this is the sort of use that these cheaper tools are intended.

20 v drill I have had for 2 years, as long as you charge after use it seems to run for some hours.
Only problem i have noticed is the bearings in the spindle are getting worn and chuck is not as positive as it was?

Plus 1 -I also have the beastie from Lidl as picture -bought one for property jobs ashore (mainly when not at home) and earlier this year a second one for boat use to live on board . Its also possible to buy spare Lidl battery packs which come in 2 sizes and fit all the other stuff but appreciate not much use if you are an Aldi tool user.

Your release of Aldi stuff and ours is to a different schedule, if its a schedule at all. I find it odd as I would have thought we might get anything slightly earlier than Europe as it nearly all comes from China - its just a matter of delivering containers to different places. I'm not aware that Lidl has arrived on our shores but we do have a Cosco or 6 (which is where my mains angle grinder came from, when the Bosch gear box wore out. I have B&D battery tools, well drill and circular saw - but the chuck on the drill is rubbish. I've resisted buying Aldi tools primarily because I was unsure of the battery life, how much charge it holds and how month, months/years, the batteries might last.

I note the batteries now seem to be all Lion and all still Workzone.

I'll now look out for the battery angle grinder, for the boat, and then force myself into buying some of the other stuff.

Its a very long trip to buy an angle grinder The trip is so awful I'll have aged another 10 years by the time I got back. I recall when air travel was an adventure and romantic - sadly - no longer.

Problem is that Aldi in Oz is independant from Aldi in Europe and sells a whole variety of products you will not see in UK stores which it sources directly from its own suppliers.
Generally a far better store in Oz as opposed to here in UK.
My daughter does a lot of her food shopping there in preference to Woolworths etc.

I have a set of ryobi 18v battery tools then include an angle grinder. Mine use the same battery and charger.

Ryobi worth looking at, I have three but not the grinder. Plenty after market batteries around which are far cheaper than genuine.

I have the Aldi Workzone 16v Li-on drill which I keep on board. Complete in a plastic box. I did buy a 2nd battery for it direct from Germany. Pleased so far.

Interesting here regarding the description of battery powered tools by voltage. Assuming we are talking Li ion batteries.
One cell has a voltage of between about 3.6 discharged 3.7 volts (as usually recognised or described voltage) up to 4.1 volts fully charged. Hence we would assume 5 cells would give a voltage of 18.5 volts. 4 cells would give 14.8 volts and 6 cells would give 22.2 volts. So can assume 5 cells can be described as a 18 volt battery. 20 volts if you want to sell it and exaggerate the voltage. But the same thing. I can't guess if a "16volt" battery has 4 cells very much exaggerated or 5 cells understated. Probably the former. Anyway just to be pedantic or perhaps informative. ol'will
