Alderney / Roscoff Q\'s

Just doing a passage plan for next weekend. Solent to N Brittany coast.

Without going into Braye for a few hours at anchor / buoy is there any anchorages with good holding around North end of the island to wait for a few hours for the tide to go south down to St P.

Also never used them but from memory there are some visitor mooring buoys just off Roscoff / Isle de Batz ? are they still there No mention in the reeds.

TIA

If you get your timing right you there is no need to anchor en-route to SPP but otherwise there is Longis Bay, if conditions are right.

There are visitors buoys at the eastern end of the Chenal de Batz to the west of the South Cardinal mark called Ar Chaden. They are shown in Reeds 2007 on page 842. Bloc Marine 2006 describes them as "18 mooring buoys reserved for pleasure craft during the summer [01/06 to 30/09], uncomfortable anchorage in W/NE winds, strong current in spring tides ...".
I have never used them but boats I have seen on them seemed to be getting rolled around a lot.

Will do a similar trip next week-end as well. I aim to leave Weymouth at about 0400 and be off the top of the Alderney race at HW Dover and then sail down between Sark and Jersey before turning west for L'Abervrach.

There are bouys at Ille Batz. I have used them in the past. Thet are absolutely brilliant. The Roscoff harbourmaster comes out for his dues and evens gives you a copy of the weather forecast in English.

Re: Alderney / Roscoff Q\'s

We've used the Ar Chaden buoys at the E end of the Chenal de Batz on many occasions - quite comfortable as offshore moorings go and the (very helpful) HM doesn't bother to collect dues unless there are enough people to justify the trip. If the weather is quiet. If you get tired of watching all the local activity and spotting the marks for the Chenal passage, the run to Roscoff Hbr in the dinghy (suitably timed for the tides) is a great trip ashore in quiet weather. Roscoff is a lovely town with lots to see and good restaurants.

I have got to ask Smokey - why are you heading all the way over to the Alderney race from Weymouth given your target?

Are you actually looking for a bit of rough??? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
