Aldeburgh - RNLI Rescue of Sinking Motor Cruiser

I wonder what caused it to sink. Reading the report it appears that the life raft didn’t deploy fully - scary times for the two crew who were rescued thankfully.

Further info on this. Interestingly Henry, who is mentioned in the article, led my VHF training. I expect his distress call was exemplary. Glad they were both OK, thanks to the RNLI.

'Two lives were saved': Man's dramatic rescue from sinking boat

I had been wondering what the story was so thanks for sharing.

It would be interesting to know what happened. If the stbd prop came off that would be unlucky but I am not sure that it would pierce the hull - Fairlines of that era would probably have a fairly heavy lay-up and the props would be located aft of the engine bay so not sure that would be the area that flooded if that is what happened. I wonder if they hit something and it pulled a shaft out.

Would a prop drop off whilst driving forwards? If the retaining nut had somehow been lost & if the key also failed I would imagine it would stay on the shaft at least until it stopped spinning; at which point I doubt it would catastrophically damage the hull.
One of life’s mysteries - glad no loss of life.

Lots of lobster pots around that area , or So I was told . The Felixstowe seafront was peppered with them last season , and not very well marked .

There are pots along that part of the coast but when we came back up to Lowestoft in Sept there weren't many and at this time of year they have usually been brought ashore. Doesn't mean it isn't a possibility of course.

it’s always better to be further out in that area to avoid lobster pots have had several friends pick up a pot and cause thousands of pound of damage

I'd like to know about the liferaft....seems it only partially inflated....
Looking at the picture in the link I think that the roof section had been deflated so that the crew could enjoy the view as they returned to station.

No it says that the raft only partially inflated and the crew were on top of it. Rather than in it. I suspect only one tube inflated and no arch so it did not self right....
