Albin Vega in the North West Passage

I disagree (a little). If you end up having to reverse upwind you don't need the speed, the boat weathercocks quite nicely so it's all under control, you're just pointing the wrong way.

I haven't tried to reverse directly upwind, I'll try that when the wind's in the right direction, or would that be the wrong direction? Have a 2 blade folding prop which might make a difference as well, though it's great going forward...

We have a 2-blade folder as well. It's important to give it an initial flick to open it, or nothing much happens.

Any boat will reverse directly upwind, even a Vega. We even managed to reverse in here upwind:

The Vega- Round the Island Race

This year my boat was the only Vega in the race and we completed it despite the bad conditions which caused 600 withdrawals. At no point did the boat behave badly and when the mainsheet "trimmer" was swept overboard at the back of Wight it was possible to pull him in and onto the boat under the Pushpit. Another benefit - the low freeboard at the back. Clearly of most benefit to those who do not clip on in bad conditions.

I do not understand why so few Vegas compete in this race given there are so many in the world.
