A friend have an Albin Ballad where the cabin top jammers needs replacing.
It looks as they are installed before the cast headliner is installed.
Do we need to cut a hole in the headliner to get access?

I'm not familiar with the Album Ballad but the jammers take quite a load so it's unlikely self tappers would be used to fix them. They need through bolting with at least big washers to spread the load.
So unfortunately your friend will have to remove some of the headlining.

That would not be the case if a piece of aluminium plate had been cast into the GRP & the clutches fitted with machine screws tapped into the plate.(as on my boat) Or would that sort of fixing been a later development?

That would be great provided the fixings on the replacement are in the same positions.

You would just check the size of the plate, Drill a tapping size drill & tap new holes. You only drill through the plate , not right through the whole thickness.
If for any reason they did miss then you would have to continue the hole right through. But, with luck, at least the rearward ones could be in the plate which are the most important
