Alan Burnard

When the Queen Mother passed I heard a BBC man say 'let's be happy that she lived not sad that she died', that's very much my thoughts now, Alan has left us a fabulous legacy of some of the prettiest and most seaworthy motorboats built.

I understand that the boat he built and raced himself, Sea Fox, might be back afloat this year and that his car has been left to Brooklands, a very generous thing to have done.

Very sad news indeed.

A true gent with a touch of genius.

More than a touch of genius...........A man that re-created a straight 8 1 1/2 litre Delage engine from a set of drawings is a true genius.

He spent nearly two years building a cam grinder to manufacture the camshafts as there was no commercially available solution. Walking around his garage finding previous failed attemps at casting the complex block being used as door stops.

However still being active enough to still be VAT registered in his 80's a lesson to us all!

I was looking on Berthons website at one of his creations a truly sexy looking boat with fairly up to date Yanmars in, as they say they dont make em like that anymore, sad news.

He was always pottering around my work yard at Hamble Point in his little Peugeot 206. Had a little office there up until late as a design consultant.

Im guessing you were looking at the Solent Spear VolvoPaul. Helped build her and fit the engines at Casse Tete. Interesting enough we have another at hamble point with IPS in.

He had to help redisgn the flare at the aft end as the angle of the hull was too much for the ips to work efficently.

On the Spear at Berthon he sat there looked at her and said we need this pitch prop and this diameter drew them on paper. Got them cast and they were spot on.

Amazing mind and man.
