Is it just me...or have all the really useful chandlers gone ?

I'm talking about the ones that had the 'Aladins Cave' round the back....all those 2nd hand bits and bobs that , (Practical), sailors thrive on....

Old cookers, brass lamps, magneto's that look as if they will fit, (and rarely do of course!), bits of rope....bits of bits of rope...rusty anchors, chain....deflated buoys..etc....etc...

All realy useful stuff.

'One Stop Chandlery' in Hatfield Peveril springs to mind....(now closed, downsized and moved to Maldon), I used to spend hours just looking around the back ...

Andy Seedhouse in Woodbridge...still going strong.

Us 'Practical' sailors should start a directory of these gems...

Anyone remember Thomas Foulkes underneath the arches in Leytonstone............what a place ......

I suspect it is economic. There used to be an outboard dealer on the IW who had a container load of bits & bobs, just sort through and find what you want. It all went and when asked why he said as long as he had all the 2nd hand bits, no one was buying new. The Marine Bazaar in Artic Road, Cowes is going/gone too.

The Dover chandlers ( wossname and wossname ) is near enough like that. He's even got oakum tucked away at the back

I love a bit of oakum me ........just the smell of it...

Now if Glade made an air freshner of Oakum..........I'd buy it

So why don't they make one that smells of ground coffee...freshly baked bread.....cut grass.......Smoked Haddock, (I may be on my own on that one!), it's got to be a punt for 'Dragons Den' ??
