AIS ???

just read someone looking at channel shipping on "AIS" live.
can anyone tell me what it is and can it be accessed via internet.
sounds interesting site.

Read all about it here. I reckon it's well worth a look. Registration is free. (Note that some of the feed sites seem to be down at the moment (1455, 8 Jan 05) - there's normally much better coverage of the southern North Sea and Channel.)

You will need to register, but it's free. I personally do not like leaving my home address etc. on a site when there is no need to, and use the address of the site-owner himself, or of a government organisation. Works all the time.

At this very moment part of the system has crashed (which really is the first time in months, a.f.a.i.k.).
Choose 'Europe' and see that part of the Channel is still 'up'.

I hope they are careful as seems it could be used as a wonderful aid to terrorism

i also hope ais will not be comp for yachtsman as the screen will be blotted out!

I've been leaving this service live on my PC since before Christmas - it is amusing and interesting but it has decided me that AIS really isn't such an important aid for me that I would want it as a seperate instrument. When I next buy a radar, if it is an option, then maybe I'll go for it but I don't want to clutter up my limited space with an AIS radar radar, or whatever they are calling it. I'm not likely to want to call the Pride of Cherbourg on Ch13 to ask him if he is going to pass behind me... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
