AIS transmitter or Radar Enhancer?

Do not cross the Channel and await better weather. Just like we used to.
That is true, but there were a few occasions when we chose to set out either in early morning fog or when there was a possibility of fog just because we had radar, situations when we certainly would have had to stay behind for another day or more without radar. We also have AIS, but although it can be massively reassuring to those caught out in fog, it doesn't give me quite the same level of confidence that I would actually choose to go out relying on it alone.

Very sensible post, and although I like radar, fitting one to my Rowan 22 would not be very easy and would involve having an arch made as fitting a radar dome up the mast results in it chaffing the headsail. No room in the small aft cabin for the display anyway. So AIS receiver and radar image enhancer.

I am a great fan of AIS and its utility in smaller boats is a great plus. We just need to ensure that (new) sailors are aware of its limitations, as with radar of course.
