AIS power supply

I've recently bought a boat and found that the AIS is powered directly from the engine battery rather than the house batteries.

Is this the correct way for it to be powered? I expected it to be running on the house batteries, as does the rest of the nav gear.

its up to you - but i don't like running anything off the engine starter battery. it must be easy to reconnect the AIS.

Yes agreed - I'll try to run it from a spare switch on the panel.

I guess a lazy fitter decided it was simpler to fit it like this in the first place.
