Hi dont understand the article it says you can bye one for couple hundred quid that links to chart plotter via nmea ,so is this just a reciever or does it put out your signal out as well,so i want to have one so our kids can see where we are and i want to see outher boats ,my plotter is a raymarine ap 65 so what do i need ,help please

I fitted Lowrance 3G Radar and AIS at the beginning of the year linked to my chart plotter. Transmits and receives. It allows you to not only see targets on the Radar but identify them, too. Gives target name, MMSI, speed and course. From memory, Lowrance AIS was around £700. Very good service from John at Hudson Marine down Southampton way....

If you want your kids to track you, then use the "Marine Traffic" app; this turns your mobile into a sudo AIS transponder.

Your kids can then view you on the Marine Traffic website or app.

It works really well; I used it recently to track my brother doing a West Coast Scotland cruise. It reports track, speed, heading etc in near real time on a chart. Highly recommended.

NOTE: the App does NOT broadcast AIS information over VHF (like a real transponder); it gathers your position/speed/heading etc and then sends that data (via your phone) to the Marine Traffic website service to be viewed via their website or tablet / phone Apps.

Here's a screen grab of my brothers route through the islands (he had a strange route due to overly strong tides/wind which changed his plan)

Thats strange... your note does not appear in your post....
I was going to say you do need 3G mobile signal for that to work and of course other ships can't see you.

The least expensive AIS that transmits is probably the Matsutec..... search for one of the many threads..... I have one and love it!!!

Agreed. But if the OP just wants his kids to see where Dad is, then this solution is pretty good / free!

....I use it because it allows me to see my own boat in France when I'm back in the UK. if I see it moving or if its location changes then I know there's something amiss.....

I have just fitted a Matsutec GPS/AIS transponder . Unit was about £240 delivered and cleared in the UK. I preferred to fit an additional rail mounted VHF antenna which added a little more to the bill. On a saily boat this can also be used as an emergency VHF if the big stick falls over!

You don't need to link this to a plotter as it displays in your cockpit in chart plotter format your track, your planned routes and way points and any other AIS targets. It does have NMEA AIS signal out that can be used to connect to a larger display . I am not familiar with the ops Raymarine so can not comment specifically.

The op will also be able to "see live "other boats with AIS which the mobile based AIS apps should not be used for!

The above unit is not the same as the GPS/Transponder see here:
