AIS engine

The radar display unit reads the incoming data stream and processes the data alongside the radar data when it plots the screen. If your unit says it will do heading up display then it will do it for the AIS info as well.

Although what you see on your display is a relative position and bearing what is transmitted by the AIS system is absolute position and course. It is your own unit that works out the relative stuff so using north up, course up, track up or heading up makes no difference.

I'm not so sure that you are right. A head-up radar display needs no compass input. If the display has no heading information then it can't work out where the AIS targets are with respect to the ship's head. It's not a problem of the AIS engine, which may well be producing all the required information, it's a problem for the radar display which can't show it.

Of course, if your radar has the required heading info, but you are using it in head-up mode, then there is no reason why it shouldn't show the AIS targets.
