Yes, VDES caused a bit of a rush to get radios reprogrammed to the new channel allocation for 1st Jan this year. Now more bandwidth is available for data communication between ship, shore, and satellite at much higher data rates. ATIS is a data burst at the end of your transmission but it only gives the ATIS code for your radio installation, no location, speed or such.ATIS is not an evolution of AIS, it's a data signal on VHF. The AIS evolution is called VDES and is starting to roll out across Europe. The main issue it is causing for UK boats at the moment is that a lot of marinas have moved to a frequency that you can't legally have in the UK.
