AIS App for Iphone

If say you are setting up a list of ‘friends’, it will push movement info as targets enter or leave port. That will use gps only when the app is opened - so very handy if you are watching someone’s trip or cruising a coastline with friends.

If you want to keep it on while underway then good data and a power supply would be recommended but it’s no worse than say, navionics if you keep it running.

The web version is also good and you can watch an entire trip in playback mode in good detail.

We use it to keep an eye on friends / for shore based reliables to keep an eye on us and for spotting boats when we are out and about. It’s got a new AR mode which we haven’t tried yet....

Just in case you wouldn't know, none of these apps can be used for the primary AIS purpose, i.e. collision avoidance.
They do have other nice features, but you absolutely can't rely on them for this.
Sorry if I'm teaching granma to suck eggs, but I heard folks convinced to get the same results of a proper onboard AIS, which can be a recipe for a disaster... :ambivalence:

I have used Marine traffic but they limit the number of vessels i can follow or add to my fleet.
I now use Vesselfinder app for both IPad and android

Unfortunately yes, internet needed for both . So i just use it when i am at home or anywhere else on dry land. When i am on the boat i use my chartplotter that has AIS overlay.

I find VesselFinder Pro better thane Marine Traffic as the info is updated more frequently. The Pro version cost £10 from memory and gives you more information on the target e.g. , photos, tonnage etc

Never used it but Boat Beacon is supposed to be good.
Just Googled it and it seems to be part of Pocket Mariner - not sure though.

I have the "pocket mariner" set of apps (including boat beacon) on my mobile devices as a backup.

I find them all pretty good actually for the price I paid (I think it was around £25 for 3 apps) and boat beacon is excellent. I especially like the fact that if you have an MMSI number you can program in your own boat's details which will then be picked up on web-based systems like marine traffic.
