We have a Raymarine AIS 500 transceiver, which on start up defaults to "SILENT MODE", ie receive only. Having read the manual I thought that it might be possible to change the default to TRANSMIT, but after consultation with Raymarine technical support I have been informed that this is (surprisingly) not possible.
Ok, it's not a big deal as only a few operations are required on the touch screen plotter to change the AIS to "TRANSMIT" .
I thought I would bring this to the attention of all the AIS 500 owners and users (and perhaps other brands as well), as the principle is to be 'seen' at least if you are not in a pirate area.
Surprisingly, our observations of AIS transmitted data have shown that many
yachts have not encoded the correct static data, often omitting the name of the vessel. It is frustrating having to enter the ITU website with the MMSI to identify the vessel - secrecy or what?
Another point, AIS is still in it's infancy - many older commercial vessels have AIS transceivers which DO NOT receive class B data - so you are invisible to them, AIS wise. This is a fact as one of our Company vessels with a 2005 vintage AIS transceiver, cannot display our AIS 500 transmissions. I have checked this with other vessels (with the same equipment) and found that it is a common fault. There may well be many more older AIS sets which do not display Class B data.
Cheers,
Michael.
