I have done something REALLY dumb. The 403 wind genny has an on/off switch which acts as a brake. I understand that the effect of having the switch 'off' is to join the positive and negative wires from the genny together.
On leaving the boat last Sunday my jacket caught the switch and turned it 'on' altho the batteries were off. Thus the genny has been spinning and producing power/volts and there has been nowhere for this power to go.
The result is that the genny is now covered with a fine black powder, it no longer produces any charge/current and it runs with the most god-awful graunching when the genny switch is in the 'on' position. When the genny switch is in the 'off' position the genny turns silently without any of the graunching which indicates to me that it is not bearing failure but something electronic.
The Airmaine 403 is an alternating current generator.
Any ideas please anyone.
