I have done something REALLY dumb. The 403 wind genny has an on/off switch which acts as a brake. I understand that the effect of having the switch 'off' is to join the positive and negative wires from the genny together.

On leaving the boat last Sunday my jacket caught the switch and turned it 'on' altho the batteries were off. Thus the genny has been spinning and producing power/volts and there has been nowhere for this power to go.

The result is that the genny is now covered with a fine black powder, it no longer produces any charge/current and it runs with the most god-awful graunching when the genny switch is in the 'on' position. When the genny switch is in the 'off' position the genny turns silently without any of the graunching which indicates to me that it is not bearing failure but something electronic.

The Airmaine 403 is an alternating current generator.

Any ideas please anyone.

I don't know anything about the machine you talk of but fine black powder from an electric motor or generator suggests the brushes have worn out - perhaps the generator went too fast without a load.

Hope that its only the brushes - they should not be too expensive :)

I got one of these....

...noisy things. But when I look at the amp-meter the noice becomes music in my ears!
Anyway, mail to tech@windernergy.com, this is the tech-support at the manufacturer.
I was once in touch with them about a minor installation problem and I found them most helpful.

Good luck!
