Air filter md21b.

This may sound silly, but, is there meant to be an air-filter in an md21b there apparently used to be two tapered air inlets under the manifold which I presume rusted off many years ago. ( I can see them on the brochure for the engine)

I experimented with putting some pipe in place of these and this quietened the engine considerably.So now I have two stubs welded in place and I can fit some tubing on over these cut or shaped to suit.

But I have been thinking " where is the air filter?" is there meant to be one?, should I fit one? or perhaps two ?

Is there an optimum length or taper for an air intake or is it a matter of trial and error.

I can guess from the photos the size and shape of the trumpets, if flexible tubing does not have the same effect.

I do have a spare in the garage and there is not a filter and the instruction books don't speak of one.
