age of engine

hello all
i`ve got hold of a yamaha outboard 40hp this weekend .and dose any one know the age of it .the engine number is 40be 676b 400398 could be 40039b
any help would good as i dont have a clue of its age etc

Having looked at http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/faq/viewfaqanswer/14/18/86/home.aspx, I'd take a guess at it possibly having been manufactured in 03/98.

All Yamaha outboards have and will continue to have a production date on the unit. A permanent appliqué is located on the starboard side of the outboard mounting bracket. The appliqué is stamped with the month/year of production for that outboard (ex. 04/07).

There is no user information contained in the Yamaha outboard serial number other than identification of the particular engine to which it is attached. All information for the Yamaha is contained in the model number, i.e...... F6ESRY

F = Model Designation (Four Stroke)

6 = Prop Shaft Horsepower (6 HP)

E = Trim & Tilt / Starting Method (Electric Start)

S = Shaft Length (15")

R = Control Method (Remote Control)

Y = Model Year (2000)

On the same plate as the serial number there will also be a single letter stamped in a spearate box... on mine it's black so it's quite difficult to see, but it's just before the serial number - once you have the letter go here for the year:
