aerial for car stereo on boat

On a previous boat, a piece of welding rod running horizontally across the top of a locker just below the deck worked very well. On my current boat, I have a car antenna below decks which gives excellent FM reception but I have had problems picking up Radio 4 long wave in France. As I do not want any more external wires on the wooden mast, I have just tried connecting to the guardwires via a stanchion bolt, ensuring that there are no connections to the sea via the rigging. This has improved AM reception in the UK at least. Even a stanchion insulated from the guard wires seems be adequate but I have yet to try it in France.

Now refreshing to read .....

I too advocate the "old manual" radio approach.....

a) Memory of stations is done by setting the pointer on the dial and not electronic ...
b) Most still have LW as well as VHF / MW
c) Do not need any power mantained on them at all - except when actually in use.

BUT they are so hard to find now .... as most are PLL / Digital etc. with need for small power to maintain memory.

Of course the other problem is I don't think you can find one with CD as well ...... cassette yes.

Re: Now refreshing to read .....

Like ship's cat I've got a metal boat and a domestic type wire thingy (2 copper wires in a transparent placcy strip) isn't much good- only one or 2 channels at best right now. Will be getting a glomax for TV prob, so may get a pushpit mounted thing at the same time.
