Hi
I am looking to purchase a second hand motor boat (My 1st purchase ) for use off the west coast of Scotland initially with a view to an eventual trip and cruise in the Med.

I would be open to advice on what to look for.

I have been considering a Trader 54 or Pricess 41 and would appreciate anyone who has had experience of these types of boat to offer some thoughts on them.

Thank you

Hi and welcome,

Your budget, number of people cruising with you, are you going to be living on it for a number of months etc will better help other more experienced folk on here understand your needs and provide you with more information.:):)

Budget is around the £100K mark

I plan to use it at weekends mainly to start with as I gain the required experience and certifications as just now I have only done a little sailing over the years

The long term aim is to undertake a journey to the Med and an extended cruise around the Greek Islands so that would involve living aboard for myself and my wife

I also wanted space for our children and their respective partners as well as other potential guests

Do you plan on a coastal or inland route to the Med? You need to consider air draught if you plan to go inland. Don’t know much about either boat but they are very different in size. 54ft is a big beast for a first boat.

I plan to go coastal, as far as I know the Trader 54 is too big for canal routes through France. It is a big boat for a first one, thats for sure. Perhaps I am biting off more than I can chew!

Might be a bit ambitious for a first boat. Your running costs on a Trader 54 will typically be 20% of the purchase price per year + fuel

What would that 20% comprise of ? Im thinking
  • Berthing Fees
  • Annual Lift out for anti-foul (Would this be required annually?)
  • General maintenance for wear and tear
  • Contingency for large repairs

Re Brexit and your eventual journey to the Med
You will have to return to the UK after 18 months or you will loose your VAT status.
You won’t have EU VAT status so will have to pay if you exceed 18 months.
Suggest concentrating on your requirements for local cruising and you may from experience have difference requirements for the Med.
Best of luck with your search.

Berthing in the Med 10k (more if you are cruising and not in a permanent location)
Annual service 6k
Replacement and upgrades 5k (eg covers one year, upholstery the next etc etc
plus large repairs.
Fuel???
Oh I forgot...Insurance 1k

If you are considering a Trader there are some videos of one being taken from the south west to the Norfolk broads on this forum it looked rather rolly to me so stabilisers might be an item to consider in any search. I recall the owner bailed out and left his mates to continue the delivery trip.

Thank you for the pointer, I had a read of that thread and watched the chap's videos as well as noting the possible necessity of stabilisers
