Advice Required on Fitting Replacement Engine

I'm about to re-engine my yacht, which is a 37' fin keeled sloop (Gibsea 106) with a 29HP Volvo 2003 engine which has done 4500 hours.

I haven't yet chosen the new engine but of Volvo, Yanmar and Beta I currently favour the latter two. What of these is best, why and are there other manufacturers I should be considering? Where is the best place to buy the engine to get the best price!?

I may fit the engine myself especially if the job is not too difficult and time consuming. I am very practical but have not done the job before so any advice offered, sites to look at or books to refer to, would be greatfully received.

Take the boat abroad - to mainland Europe - and expect to pay £2500 less than you would in UK. That applies even if the VAT rate in your chosen country is much higher thsan UK.

I did it in 2000, saved £2500 and had excellent service and support. I went to Ega Marina near Aarhus in Denmark and used Lund Marine.

Its nothing like the hassle you get from UK.

You have to consider many things:-
BETA and NANNI both use the Kubota base engine, a very well thought of industrial engine, so suggest you get comparative quotes - on a previous thread it was noted that Nanni has a longer warranty - but what the position would be for DIY installation you will have to check.
Will a replacement Volvo(2030 or 2040 I believe) fit on the same engine bearers without too much alteration? If so this might be the way to go.
Cost and availability of spare parts - a sailing mag did a comprison recently and Volvo was quite reasonable, although the general consensus is that Volvo spares are expensive.
I don't have any personal experience of the Yanmar but most people seem to think it is a good engine.
The Volvo 2030/2040 is based on a Perkins(Japanese) base engine and again is a good base engine.
Cost of any upgrading of Propshaft, Prop, silencer, exhaust pipe, stern gland, flexible coupling etc etc.
Go to the SBS or LBS and see all the manufacturers and see if there are any deals going for ordering at the boat show.
Talk to other owners of similar craft and see what they say.
Look back through previous postings and you should pick up some good info.
Good luck and keep us informed.

Get the job done in mainland Europe.

I good idea and one that I would seriously consider except that I'm engineless at the moment and I don't fancy crossing the channel without one. Denmark is too far for me, I'm based in Gosport, but I dearsay there are good marine engineers in places like Cherburg.

If I choose Volve it would be the 2030 to replace a 2003. I understand there are no special brackets made to convert from one to the other, and the 2003 requires a left handed prop. So when it comes to changing to another manufacturer it's probably a level playing field because they will all require new stern gear and some fibreglass work.

Not going to comment on individual suppliers, but I re-engined three years ago and did the job myself (from a Yanmar YSM12 to a 2GM20F).

The reason was that I did not have enough hp to punch through wind and waves more than anything to do with the condition of the engine - although the horizontal cylinder and associated stories did make me wary with the old engine.

Your existing engine has not done a lot of hours. Firstly consider a rebuild. That means that there would be no change to existing engine beds and drive train. If you change to another manufacturer you will have to take that into account.

If you do decide to go with a new engine - do it yourself. Budget to spend at least 15 weekends doing it, and replace as much of the old stuff (fuel pipes/exhaust etc) when the engine is out. IMHO there is no point in replacing an old engine and not replacing any of the old ancillaries - weakest link will always be found.

Budget to spend a reasonable amount of time with a different engine just getting it lined up exactly. I lost count of the number of times the engine was lowered into position for sizing, even though the new engine fitted dtaright onto the existing engine beds.

I learned a lot doing it myself, and saved myself a considerable amount of money.

Hope this helps.

Why replace the Volve 2003 engine?

It has done 4,500 hours over its 16-year life and has become increasingly unreliable and expensive to run. This season alone I've had bills of £1,800! It has been re-furbished (and re-bored) once.

We use Yanmah 3GM30 engines in our yacht club work boats and they take all kinds of abuse and keep going. I also have a Yanmah in my own boat and wouldn't look anywhere else for an engine. The spares are available all over the world and are reasonably priced. The finish on a Yanmah is far better than a Beta or Nanni. IMHO look on further than a Yanmah and dont be put off by having a raw water cooled version so long as its fitted with a Vetus filter you'll have no probs for years to come!

Re Nanni as a replacement engine

An important consideration is good support network which for Nanni doesn't appear to exist. There isn't even a list of dealers on-line. I did track down the names of a couple of dealers in my area (Hampshire). I'm not impressed by the number or their credentials.
