We have done the trial run and took Sarah Giddings to Gibraltar this year on an extended leave period. We now know we want to do it for real and are cooking up various unoriginal cruise plans

My question is really how to get made redundant. We could manage without but it would nice to have a lump sum to buy a few treats for the boat and have some more money in the kitty. Suggestions anyone?

Much easier in many ways than it used to be now that "Last In, First Out" would be regarded by Employment Tribunals as an unfair selection procedure.

It all depends on the job you do, your value to your Company, your Company's financial position and whether there are any other roles being considered for redundancy elsewhere in the Company.

If there are other roles being considered for redundancy elsewhere then inform the Company that you would are prepared to volunteer. A lot will depend upon how interchangeable jobs are and whether retained employees can be re-trained for your role.

Your Company many be prepared to accept your resignation in exchange for an ex-gratia settlement but you will need to take the initiative and they will probably be reluctant to call it redundancy (which is a dismissal and could be tax-free) unless you sign a compromise agreement. You should therefore volunteer to sign such an agreement and might also volunteer to pay your own solicitors fee as you will need to consult one if the agreement is to be valid. This will probably be a couple of hundred Pounds.

Be sure in your own mind that whatever happens you intend to resign anyway as starting this ball rolling may well be a career-limiting move!

Hrmm

Thanks RichardS
That pretty much lines up with what I more or less knew anyway. I work in the geekier end (UNIX) of IT delivering to Local Government. Very few people do what I do as the rest are familiar with that other operating system. This should in theory help but councils are rushing to deliver as much as possible on line which means that IT suppliers are actually doing quite well at the moment.

There is a steady trickle of people "departing" but this isn't the place to discuss that.

I shall watch and wait for a bit. Cruising plans dictate a departure around March/April time (the boat is in Gibraltar at present) assuming plan A sticks to head into the Med.
