Advice please on road haulage of boat from Edinburgh

A mate of mine uses John Shepherd. Mob 07836 706119. Eve 01536 538216.
He has used him several times.

Rather depends on whether its something than can be towed on a trailer by a 4X4 or whether its going to need a lowloader with a zillion wheels and a police escort.

From personal experience I, too, would highly recommend John Shepherd. Note that his landline std number is 01563 (Kilmarnock) not 01536 (Kettering).

to Glasgow?

I might need to move a boat by road. Can anyone recommend a haulier please?

Many thanks

How big and what weight is the boat?, Will a crane be required?

I have used John Shepard more than once at various locations throughout Scotland.

He is very good but not the lowest cost.

I used another carrier to move my own boat within Fife last year.

We need more boat details and what loading facilities will be required.

Can recommend MJS Boat Transport. Speak with Mike Szraga on 01389 755047 or 07979 806122. The delivered Herald from Tighnabruaich up to Inverness. Very good service and reasonable cost.

Jon Shepard gets my vote. Took me from Lymington South coast of England to the Clyde £1000. Turned up when he said he would looked after the boat well, very nice man as well.

Thanks guys,

Boat size will be max 28 feet, 5 tons. I don't meant to be vague about the size but I have a short list of 4 boats to see and they are all in Edinburgh.

I have considered the canal but of course I need to weigh up the time required (British Waterways say 5 days!).

Cheers

5 days? That's the length of the licence for the Carron/Clyde ditch. It takes 2 days with a night at Kirkintilloch. You also need to factor in the tide times for getting up the Carron and doon ra watter. My recommendation is don't even think about it if you draw more than 5 feet, but otherwise it is a reasonably relaxing trip.

Another vote for John Sheppard. We moved our boat in the opposite direction for around £400. Don't forget to budget for lifting on and off the trailer and depending where you depart from in Edinburgh you may need to pay for your own crane.

Yeah, I thought 5 days was a bit long but the lady from BW said that 'they' would provide escort and operate all the locks on route.

More importantly, if a boat draws 5 feet in seawater can anyone say how much more in fresh water? I seem to recall about another 4 inches (in which case I would need 5'4" thru the canal.

I do quite fancy the canal actually................

i would think you need to set aside minimum of 4 days for the canal - a day to get there, 2 days going thru` and a day to get to your destination at the other end.

"They" do indeed provide a team of willing workers complete with vehicle that operate all the locks and ride shotgun as necessary - all you have to do is work the ropes. There is also a guy on a bike that accompanies transits just because he likes the canal. They like to start early on both days, expecting you to reach the top of the Maryhill (of Taggart "There's been a muuurder" fame) locks about 08:00 on the 2nd day. Mast has to be down and this can be done at Port Edgar or Grangemouth, for a price. Mast up at Bowling is a free do-it-yourself (actually "they" push the buttons) service. As to depth - if yours is a solid metal fin then apart from rubbing off anti-fouling if you touch, you should be ok. A GRP encapsulated keel is much more vulnerable and I (and at least 1 other Contessa 32) - draft 5'6" in salt water - have suffered from lack of depth.
Be sure you know how to clear weed from the engine intake especially if BW have been cutting the stuff.

You should have change from £100 - not a lot - for the whole trip.

Thanks everyone for your valued remarks and suggestions.

Awol.................sorry I did'nt look further than my nose! and have sent you a separate PM.

All the boats I am looking at are long keel and draw 5ft.........now I am in a quandary!!

The more I think about it the more I want to use the canal, but ?????

Cheers

Just pick a nice weekend and enjoy the scenery. 5Ft will be OK for the Forth and Clyde and the shore team will look after you. Plenty of pubs along the way for refreshment and facilities :)
