Aha - you made it then Mr S...
Yes went round Lands End 2 weeks ago. A great trip 270 miles from portishead.
Looking forward to our new cruising ground in Torquay.

'Scuse me, but I can't for the life of me figure what you can do with a soft eye that you can't with a bowline, in this case.No. The soft eye is locked tight by passing it through the base of the cleat and then passing the rest of the line through and then pulling tight. with a bowline the loop can move unless you put at least 2 turns round the cleat base
Aha, maybe I get it now. Then again, why couldn't you do the same with a bowline rather than a soft eye?Rather than loop over the horns, I specifically suggested locking onto the pillars of the base.

I suppose the use you are suggesting for the soft eye is the following, 'innit?
Or maybe you meant the variation of passing the line through the loop before pulling it, hence "locking" even better the line?
Regardless, you could do either and achieve exactly the same result also with a bowline, in my books.
