Advice please on dock lines and knots

No. The soft eye is locked tight by passing it through the base of the cleat and then passing the rest of the line through and then pulling tight. with a bowline the loop can move unless you put at least 2 turns round the cleat base
'Scuse me, but I can't for the life of me figure what you can do with a soft eye that you can't with a bowline, in this case.
I suppose the use you are suggesting for the soft eye is the following, 'innit?
Or maybe you meant the variation of passing the line through the loop before pulling it, hence "locking" even better the line?
Regardless, you could do either and achieve exactly the same result also with a bowline, in my books.

Rather than loop over the horns, I specifically suggested locking onto the pillars of the base. You are right, the method in your diagram would be prone to movement and chafe. You could of course make your eye with a bowline, but that is unnecessary as the benefit of a bowline is that it can be undone - not a benefit for permanent lines. The eye can be very small - in fact mine are the eyes round what were thimbles for shackles that I used before the club installed new berths and discouraged the use of shackles. So just removed the thimbles (hard work!) and used the eye.

Aha, maybe I get it now. Then again, why couldn't you do the same with a bowline rather than a soft eye?
Mind, I'm not saying/suggesting that a bowline is better, and I understand that the benefit of undoing a bowline is useless in this case.
'twas just your original point on doing something to avoid chafe/movement with a soft eye that can't be done with a bowline, which made me curious...

Exactly what we used at Essex marina in the middle of the Crouch for years. If we didn't lose a rope to wear there then its good for anywhere.
