I plan a delivery trip from Mallorca to Teneriffe next october (yes, the boat, a Oceanis 423, is insured for that....) via Casablanca and Madeira. What literature can you recommend for the different legs of the trip? Every kind of feedback appreciated.

Thank you, Holger

Casablanca is a hole by all accounts . . . a friend was crew on a yacht that called in there three years ago. The owner booked himself into the Hilton and left his crew on board under a sewer outfall.

I though it might have got a bit better, but if you read Nicho's account in the current YM you will see that it obviously hasn't.

Best all-round source of cruising info on the web is Jimmy Cornell's http://www.bluemoment.com

i think the reason for the delivery is that the time to reach tenerife is before end august rather than sometime in October - but perhaps an owner wants to keep the boat in the med for as long as poss? High winds are much more frequent the later you go and that bit pre-tenerife seems (by reports, not done it) to be worse than an atlantic crossing weatherwise. Could it be moved to september, i wonder?

TCM, you're right, the owner wants to keep in mallorca as long as possible, departure is october 18 th...., so it can't be moved.
I imagine the part Mallorca-Gibraltar might be annoying with prevailing westwinds - anybody experience with that?

I did Denia to UK starting in October 2002. Wind in Med was generally N.W. F3.
We had a gale for a couple of days and holed up in Almerrimar.
Most unpleasant bit is likely to be the Straits. Pilot book says words to the effect that you are lucky to have strong wind on the nose as strong wind from behind means a gale in the western end.
We motorsailed through in flat seas and almost no wind.

Does not seem to bad to me, The Blue Water rally leave Gib in Oct. All the way down Portugal in September this year we were sailling with people planning to get to The Canaries for the ARC in November. Several friends went from Sines to Maderia the the canaries in Oct and motored most of the first leg.

We motored though the Gib Straight in no wind on 22nd Dec without waiting for a weather window, although I think we were lucky Terifa is the windy city! expect strong winds most days, the latter in the year the better chance of less wind, is what I expect from a windsurfers view, as Sept and Oct have more strong wind days at Tarifa than Dec. Having said all of that other friends took 3 weeks from Gib to portimao with head winds.

So take your chances when you can.

P did Ibiza to Gran Canaria in december 98 via Gib and Vilamoura. As far as crossing the Strait, you can call Tarifa Radio on Channel 16 (possibly all the way from Gib) and ask them what the conditions are (but you might get a reply in "Spanglish"...). Frpm Vilamopura, I made coastise to Cape St Vincent to cross the traffic separation lane there and get all my "big ships" over in one fell swoop (all the traffic to/from Northern Europe and North America passes there as the GC route to America actually is through land North of Cape St Vincent). Idecided to skip Madeir as I'd been advised of some storms in the Atlantic that might come that way and made direct for Lanzarote. in a N'ly F6 and the movement on my 29 footer was pretty rough (really had to wedge myself in my bunk)

You will motor all the way to Gibraltar - with an anchorage under the light at Cabo Gato (to avoid cruddy weather) and a possible re-fuel at Almeria.

After fuelling at Gibraltar (walk across to La Linea for cheap groceries but cheap fuel at Gib) you will sail away to NE winds. At that time of year you will hit a SW wind about half way down to the Canaries. Wait a day at sea, the low system is bound for the Algarve, then resume sailing SW.

Your next stop is Puerto Calero in Lanzerotte, followed by wind on the beam until you reach Santa Cruz (Marina Atlantico) on the NE corner of Tenerife.

That´s how it always seems to be for me at that time of year.
