Advice on first time to Holland crossing North Sea

I am going to sit down this winter and look to plan a trip to Holland, ( I have not started yet) and my idea is to leave the boat there for three months, it is an area we have always wanted to explore and when we bought the Broom we had this sort of thing in mind.

I am fine re Solent to east coast and the crossing.

But just wandered what town or area in Holland makes a good base start point, given I will be accessing it from UK on the Broom, and when we drive back to the boat need reasonable access ( not a nightmare road trip)

would like to avoid hugely commercial ports

Personally I love the south....maybe as it's easier to get too, my favourite stops were middelburg and Veer, both great places to stay and leave the boat.

It's some time since I've been over there but Middelburg was invariably the favoured option to leave boats. Sounds like it still is.

I need to buy the charts for this and start digging perhaps the Shell Pilot for east Coast would be good, thank you for the replies etc, Middelburg was mentioned by a mate of mine over the weekend as well as a favoured spot

trip from sailorman is more or less what I wanted to sugest,
In the "De Westerschelde" You could visit Antwerp if you like that kind of city's

Middelburg en Veerse meer is nice

then in De Oosterschelde "Goes" is very nice, be carefull with timing, takes a while to go all down in the old town, (opening times of the bridges) but really worth doing
Zierikzee is also nice for a stop

in "Het Grevelingen meer" I like "Brauwershaven" cozy harbour in village center

next "Willemstad" (approx near that red dot) is a nice place to stay, and from there you can go several directions,
nature park Biesbosch,
or Dordrecht Rotterdam, area
or all the way to Amsterdam, ....
you have to asc more specific advice there, don't know the area that well
also a few local villages are nice, ao Haringvliet

Lousie Busby is a member of the Broom Owners Club. She and David Broad (also a member of BOC) wrote the book. That was a while ago now but I believe all the updates are on the web site.

Thank you to Wavey and you all for the very useful information, we were offered the chance to go with Broom Owners Club on a similar trip, but would much prefer to go alone if I am honest, nothing against them as they seem like good people. A quick look says that if we go to Zeeland then Kent coast is the best base to cross from, but that was a quick glance today on my phone, I will prep properly over the Christmas holiday. Emjaytoo keeps his yacht in Kortgene, a large marina on the Versemeer. The drive there looks to be under 3 hours from Calais. Whilst Middelburg is a lovely town there will always be a delay in getting out in the Versemeer and away further due to the lock out of the canal (and maybe also the bridge out of the inner basins at Middelburg). By being on the Versmeer you are straight out and just have one small lock to get into the Osterschelde and off and away.

For a first timer i would say that Middelburg is a must see, especially a w/e in high summer when there wll be lots going on in the town.

a quick online tells me that could be a good suggestion, Kortgene does look well positioned re access etc, thank you again

As is Kats marina ,Sas van Goes, WSV Oranjeplaat is a nice friendly club owned marina with yard & chandlery + clubhouse, well sheltered & certainly well worth a look. The friendliest place we stayed in 6 weeks this summer

if you have open cpn the charts are a free download via the open cpn site. see #6 those are the free charts

Delta Marina at Kortgene is a good marina to keep the boat as already suggested. Places like Middleburg, Goes, Zirikazee etc are all a must visit but probably not the best to keep a boat. Roompot Marina also a good jumping off point for cruising. We went this year and Zeeland is as great place for cruising

Whilst still relatively cheap compared to med/uk prices some of the nice places like Kortgene, Port Zelande can be up to double of the less fancy marina's.
Still good but without the benefit of a prime location. Not sure if the is room but if you leave it in Lage Zwaluwe I can keep an eye on it for you . Feel free to send a PM if you need any info as I boat in this area.
