Advice on boat choice

I was going to post a separate thread but as the Sealine S42 is in this thread I'll give anyone the heads up on a certain boat listed with James Dickens marine , it's a blue hulled S42 in Ireland. .
At the moment a very good friend is there and has viewed it at great cost to himself, it is totally misrepresented, poor mate has been on the phone to me the last 2 days , I'm in Malaga Spain on a short break from work.
The fault list is endless , one engine won't start , there is wiring hanging down from the bow thruster feed through the ceiling head lining , to trim one drive you have to go in the engine bay and short out the pump trim relay.
He should have trailed it today but the EVC is locked up so the relevant fault code is major stopping this happening.
Poor man has wasted hard earned money on flights and car hire to view a pile of crap .
Broker saying he has viewed the boat himself .
Come on James this isn't fair you have totally misrepresented this advert, you should be paying his expenses .

Is this the one Paul?

http://www.jamesdickensmarine.com/brokerage/Powerboats/Sealines42.htm

Looks pretty tidy but I see the price was reduced in April 2015 which would have rung alarm bells for me. Also his 'videowalk' is from 5 Sept 2012 so 5 years ago. I wonder when James last saw it?

Advert says service 2012, some works 2013, price reduce 2015, video 2012.

Yup ad accrurately has those dates .
Thing is with long range trips ,you need to build up a rapport with the broker and ask pertinent questions before travelling .
In this case check / confirm how long it's been for sale 2012 ? -then ask why it's for sale ,this leads to why it's not sold ,this leads to annual services and lift out -when .
How many hours since 2012 .
Then knowing ( from this forum or others ) about normal VP out drive woes* and service schedules - make a call from there wether to travel .
At some stage through dialogue the broker senses that it's been stood around for 5 years and you gonna be prepared to take a punt -
At a reduced below market price -- which it looks like it .
It at this stage presume in one of the conversations about coming across to view that the broker should find out if it starts etc .ie is a runner .- via the owner or the owners rep .

If it's a none runner find out before travelling

* trim relays ---
* emulsified oil in legs
* Evc issues --
* bellows
* corroded risers
* soaked alternators

Along with none VP outdrive specific stuff like - duff bats , decaying chargers , stuck pumps , ver d Gris on various switches / spades etc .

ad looks ok to me --- prospective ,s fire away with q,s filling in the blanks :encouragement:

More feedback .
Sea trial didn't happen as port engine inoperative, bilge full of coolant .
Canopy in tatters , held together with miles of gaffer tape, ceiling lights changed and don't fit aperture so linings need replacing , the list goes on . A revised offer was made but declined .

Another good Q before travel is " any new parts fitted recently "
And ask for pics of the ERoom , anchor locker , head linings etc --via e mail .
Copies of all recent service work even in this case 2012

TBH it quite good fun gathering info from remote boats , deliberating a visit .

I would not have gone on the info provided to this one .

Look at the Seateck,s in the link ^^^^ -- you could eat your dinner off those -- that boats well looked after and worth a trip

Personally, I found that the simple question "what's it really like" normally yields a fair answer from the broker. I even had some brokers telling me "Pete, you won't like it" or "it's knackered" or "it's overpriced".

And at the end of the day, despite it being what sounds like a basket case, it has resulted in an offer so can't have been a totally wasted trip.

What's the back story for why it's sat so long for sale / unloved?

That's an easy answer , it's unloved and unserviced , items going wrong with no doubt no money to fix .
Offer based on JD video and advert ,owner obviously won't update condition.
It's not sold over there because of its condition.
It's 5 k to get it back to the uk .
May as well buy one here .

I fully agree that a B43F1 is much better than a Sealine in almost every way, for anyone interested in a "wind in the hair" boat.
Otoh, frankly I can't suggest a Brit willing to bring the boat to the UK to consider this one, because I wouldn't want Seatek engines serviced anywhere else than in IT - and even around here, not by everybody.

Besides, in this specific installation, while I agree that the engine compartment looks mint, the brownish junction between the turbo and the filter on port engine is a bit suspicious.
And judging from the pics, it seems to me that the engine compartment is too tight for those blocks, which at a guess were not originally installed by the builder.
In fact, you can't see them in the pics, but IIRC oil filters are right in between the engines and the forward bulkhead, which looks close enough to make even just their replacement a bit of a nightmare... :ambivalence:

If you are looking for a Targa 43 there are a couple for sale in Holland. Would save you transport. If the Targa 40 you are interested in I have one for sale but a 2001 one. I prefferred the T40 over the T43 for cockpit layout and engine access without moving the table. I That said the T43 has more interior room. I disliked the round seating and the grill up front where the family wants to sit when you are on the move. For me the ideal boat would be the 43's interior with the 40's cockpit.

On the D6 VS Kad 44 or 300 (which is 285 HP) I would say

D6 more grunt, faster top end which is tempting. More expensive to maintain, electronics, drives, have been told in combination with the tender makes the boat a bit stern heavy with not much margin for extra junk.
KAD series: simpler, less to go wrong and the 290 drive is more reliable as the steering ram is in the boat. Still cruises nicely at 22/25 knots.
Don't think neither is bad, more a budget choice.

Hi Paul
I was at Lymington yesterday to look at a Targa 38, decided that it is to small, also looked at the Windy 43. It needs new decking outside as well as a few other things but looked a good boat. I am interested in your comments when you went on the boat a few years ago. Do you think the characteristics you found where because of this boat or is it the same for the model. Being relativily new to boating (18 months) what do you mean by the rudders stalling and rode on its chine. What I have read on this boat on the net is that it is meant to be a good sea boat even if turning is not sharp.

If shafts are a must you are going to have to be patient and wait for a tidy T43.
My advice without dragging up the shaft versus out drive debate would be to consider
a well maintained and serviced targa 40 around 2004/5 with D6 310 which is the non super charged engine
Which is less stressed than the higher output D6s , and in the same vain a Princess V42 with same engine .
Have a look at Approvedboats.com based on the Hamble, they are advertising a real nice looking V42
You will have more choice if including outdrives and really at this size I would enjoy the more sporty and economical
Performance and put the savings in a rainy day account , and you may get lucky and not have any big bills.
Good luck
