fate comes in many ways but it could either be a mucky amature, brush contacts and the regulater probs? not forgeting good lead contacts a must.

I had the same problem with my Sealine Volvo. Alternators need to overcome a small resistance before they kick in. The dash light serves this purpose, but if no light is fitted, as with my Sealine, a rubber-encapsulated resistor is inserted in the output wire from the alternator. These burn out and are relatively expensive to replace. However you can buy a replacement from RS Components for 52p so long as you buy 5 at a time.

PROBLEM SOLVED !

It was an excitation fault. It turned out that neither alternators had ever had a connection to the EXT terminal, when a competant electrics man added a bridging wire everything worked properly. Apparently the alternators had been left to "self excite!" Many thanks for all the responses.
