Advice on 1st boat

Hi everyone, I am looking to buy my first boat next year, I have no experience but I like the Bayliner 212 cuddy. I have around £24k to spend. Can anyone tell me if this would be a good choice or advise of anything else in that price bracket please.

Historically, Bayliners have been built to a slightly inferior standard than some of the other American brands. Recent boats apparently much better. There's a huge Bayliner club based in the states http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/F16779/ but I'm sure you could find a lot more.

Really does depend on what you are looking for and what you want to do. Lots of choice but also (IMHO) lots of rubbish in that price bracket - but I guess its a matter of taste. Mine is for sale just below your price - web address below, nothing like a Bayliner but a lot better (I would say that wouldn't I)!

Bit more detail on what you are looking for will undoubtedly bring a flood of advice, usually good in my experience.

It's all about what you want to use it for and where you want to use it. I have had two brand new USA boats in the past, but wish I'd gone for something bigger and built in the UK. I now have an 18 year old Fairline which is a far better sea boat than either of the previous brand new boats, has heaps more room in it and seems of a far superior build quality.

For half the money you could get a Four Winns 205 Sundowner - better fit out than Bayliner. Not that you can tell what I've got. What are you using it for and where?

Hi Maverick,

Welcome! Most on this forum have been through the same process as you and started out with Cuddys. There are lots too chose from but you need to decide what you are going to use it for. If you are going to use it for cruising then you need a full cover, which you can stand up under. The Bayliner does not have this. If you are going to sleep on it for more than the odd night you will need a decent size cuddy and a galley area. Glastrons and Chaparrals put the Galley unit behind the drivers seat in the cockpit, which increases the size of the sleeping area in the cuddy. Other important factors to consider are Engine size and fuel type, re-sale value and weight if you are planning to Tow it. The Glastron is a good entry-level mini cruiser boat at a great price; the Bayliner is more of an overnighter. Personally I went for the Chaparral 205 SSE. It was a great boat and even took me from Poole to the Channel Islands and back. If you really want to blow the budget get a Regal but they are expensive (Although Essex have one in). I am sure you will get lots of good advice, if you want more just ask,

lots of people,lots of experience ,lots of different boats. But that really sums up boating. You have drawn some sort of short list as to what you think you will want as a boat, but will have seen from other postings that there are perhaps variables you havent thought about. There is a general understanding that no one gets it right first boat/desires or needs change. Coming on to winter,use the time to nose about ,talk to people. You have many months of "dead" time ahead of you, well for most people anyway, before the next season. See if you cant get an odd ride , maybe thru this forum, and see whether what you THINK you want to do, is really what you want to do. (see Solitaire posting on sbs fallout). The few wise words I ve learnt from ,is remember for most of us its a compromise between what the male wants and what the female wants. Get it wrong and you are going to be ,well... Also read all the postings about safety and learning curves.Zooming into the blue yonder in a small boat may turn out to be very scary indeed, but pottering about in a safe enviroment,developing skills may not be the thrilling boating picture in the brochure. Think warm clothing and lifejackets in UK, not designer shorts and bikinis, and you are on your way. (Promise, you ll remember that comment in 21ft !) Lastly, there are plenty of people bought a new boat and fallen aside, so you should be able to save by buying an almost new boat. Sorry, meant as a degree of realism to match the brochures dreams!PM me , and hope to see you on the water !

Have a look at this months Motor Boat Monthly which carried a test of several boats of this type. In spite of the opinions of our anti-Bayliner mob, you will see that the Bayliner came out near the top, even more so when you look at the price of the boat that scored higher.

The more second hand petrol powered craft that come onto the market, the better it will be for the values of the relatively fewer diesel flavoured ones.

Alot of people are not keen on Bayliners, I owned a 2655 for 3 years and have to say i had not problems and thought it was a great boat.

You have to remember that as you are only probably using it for a maxium of 104 days a year, thats if you use it every weekend!!! Which i doubt you will. You dont need the best built boat to get you started.

Bayliner are good quality first and second boats. They may not have the build quality of some of the British builders but you have to ask youself do you need that level of quality for something you are not using everyday??

Also the local dealer is very important, if you can find a good one, buy whatever make they supply, this will maximise the enjoyment.

I drive Landrover because of a good local dealer, without that dealer I would probably have a Jaguar.
