Hello

Has anyone had experience of the requirements for water tight bulkheads and how services from bilge pumps, domestic hot and cold water, fuels and electrical systems are run through these steel partitions?

I have been told that I will have to run stainless steel tube through the bulkheads (steel boat) so meaning multiple long runs of stainless pipe for both bilge and fuel which I can understand but can a plastic pipe be used for the internal water supply as long as it’s high in the Bulkhead?

Lastly is stainless the best option for the pipework.

Some pics of the boat can be seen in my profile which shows the empty internal boat.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

As you know coding a boat for ocean is not a trivial matter. Best to engage an approved surveyor or naval architect who will get it through the process and take his advice.

Looks like a great boat.

Great looking boat!

Have been going through nightmares on getting boats coded over the years, as Tranona states the only way is to get a Surveyor involved who can guide you to make the right choices. If poss use the same guy to do the Codding Survey...... Keeps him happy and makes life easier!

If you are reinstating her Lloyds 100A1 then you can purchase the relevant standards from Lloyds which will give guidance on this. In addition the MCA Code of Practice also describes requirements in general terms that you have to satisfy. I believe you will have to comply with new build rules unless the yacht is being renovated back to original.

My own experience is from refitting projects on larger vessels and water tight bulkheads always required type approval for the penetration. You can buy type approved pipe and cable penetrations for bulkheads. The water tight door manufacturer may be able to advise. I realise that the certifying requirements for larger vessels are very different for yachts less than 25 meters, but hope that this may at least provide food for thought.

If you do not have the MCA code, you can obtain it from the MCA web site at www.dft.gov.uk/mca/blue.pdf
