Hi , this is my first post and i am looking for a bit of advice .After about 10 years without a boat I've decided to take the plunge again and get another. I have found the boat i want in Spain but it is not with a broker and i am wondering what would be the best way of proceeding with it. I know a Spanish boat will have to be taken off the Spanish register and the broker would normally do this and deal with deposits etc but how would i go about this if i was to do it myself , or do i need to employ a Spanish solicitor to do a contract and handle all the paper work. If anyone had experience of buying in Spain i would appreciate any advice on what to do now .Thanks

Some this is going to be down to the boats value and how comfortable you feel with the amount of money involved and your experience of the vendor to date.

If it is a lot of money then boats.co.uk used to offer an overseas buying service ( for a fee of course) to sort all of this stuff out.

Not read through the above but they are re a similar topic and may assist you.

You could always ask a local broker to step in for a fee to sort this for you and also act as stakeholder. Again it really depends on the amount of money involved.

I was having exactly this conversation yesterday with my local broker, whom I trust. I want to buy a Spanish registered boat (not through him, he doesn't have it listed)
If you just want SSR registration its easy on the internet , de-registering a Spanish boat is a more bureaucratic process, more paper work, best done by someone who has done it before, but not difficult. There is a small fee for this. You can set up the ssr and use the boat whilst the Spanish listing goes through the paper machine. You will need a bill of sale of some kind - again easy to do, just remember as a private sale the boat will be sold as seen. And you will need the current Spanish listing paper work (which the owner will have that will show IVA (VAT) paid and the details of the current owner if its on the 7th list. A friendly local broker would do it for a small fee I'm sure.

Hi Fred,

I hope you are well. I live and work in the industry here in Spain so if you are having any issues or concerns please do not hesitate to get in touch, I would be happy to offer any advice you may require.

Many Thanks

Hi , it is not a particularly expensive boat ,he's asking € 55000 ,but having said that ,it is my total budget and I don't want to risk anything ,so i feel it would be safer to employ someone on my side to deal with the the registration issue and the transfer of money once the paper work is finalised. From the contact i have had with him he seems easy to deal with and has said that all the documentation is in order so hopefully it should be straight forward.
After searching the forum here and googling in general i may have 2 options, first is , i found a recommendation for a British surveyor who works in the region , i could get him for the survey and he may be able to suggest a lawyer to do a contract and handle payment . Second is a local firm http://www.tecnimarpuerto.com/ who may be able to do everything in house and they are based in the same city as the boat is in .
I will send a few emails tomorrow and see what response i get.
