Hi All,

Im new here and hope you dont mind if I pick your brains. Im hoping to take a charter in the Adriatic next year some time in August. Can anybody advise me on what the weather conditions in this area are like this time of the year in the area? The crew will be made up of people with varing levels of experience and I dont want to be in a position where the conditions will beyond the capabilities of those on board.

Also has anybody chartered in this area before? can you recommend a company or person? Looking for something between 38' to 46' monohull.

Thanks for your help

Redmond

Thanks for the reply, thats pretty much what I was thinking, I just didnt want some like the Meltemi showing up.

I've spent 15 years crusing in the Ionion and suppose its pretty much like that, apart from the odd Katabatic, we only had one peice of notable weather, a water spout out of no where, that was very interesting /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Redmond,

out of the 31 days of august, on average you would expect

5 days calm;
15 days under NW breeze regime: after a calm morning, the wind will begin from the NW roughly at 1100-1200, and increase in strength (up to 15-20kt) until sunset, then calm down during the night
7 days with SE sirocco, it will begin early in the morning and gradually build up
1 day with strong NE bora wind, careful it often blows >gale force
2 days with thunderstorms (neverin), powerful but short lived Cb cloud usually coming from the northern sectors, gale force wind should last only a few hours at most

have 1 day missing still.. -.<)

enjoy

Thanks Roberto,

thats sounds fine, just wont show my wife the bits about the gales. I have to say Im looking forward to exploring some new waters, guess the next thing to do is buy the Pilot for the area.

For those of you who are interested I came accross this website

http://www.adriatica.net/croatia/feature/vjetrovi_en.htm

but not as accurate as Roberto,

dont worry about the missing day, I generally suffer at least one of those on charter. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I was thinking of going with a smaller charter company, I've generally gone with Sunsail, and for the most part they have been excellent, but I feel that there is a premium paid for the level of support they offer. I would hope that getting a relativley new boat from a smaller charter company may be the answer.

Hi
Be a bit careful, I went with my family who are fair weather sailors to around Split for the first 2 weeks of August this year. First 3 days lovely and warm with decent breeze. Forecast thunder storms and strong winds for next couple of days so we went into Split and it was blowing 35 kn by the afternoon and 40 kn the next day. I misread the forecast on the following day and went out in the morning with light winds but by lunchtime we had 35 kn again. I tried 3 marinas but they were both full so ended up in a bay at anchor. That afternoon we had 45 kn of wind. 2 days later they again forecast strong winds so got into a marina early and stayed there for 2 days. 3 days after that we had thunder storms again but luckily no winds above 25 kn.
We were obviously unlucky, but it's really put my family off sailing. The worst bit not being able to get into marinas which it being August were full of Italians in their boats over from Italy.

Chartered a 41 ft monohull through Sail Croatia at the end of June this year - 10 mins from Split airport. Crew picked up and taken to new Marina by Sail Croatia staff.

Very friendly and helpful English speaking staff. Boat - no problems at all. Have chartered previously with Moorings and found no difference. Worth a try - competitive rates as well.
Flights £99 rtn. from Gatwick to Split.

Weather and sailing excellent for the whole week.
