Adnams brewery vows to do all it can to support landlords after three sudden pub clos

Adnams may have held it's (wholesale) beer prices for 5 years but it's the rent the pubs have to pay that kills them.
That, and the fact that drinking in pubs is only for old men only these days - and they don't drink much!.

Big generalisation there Stuey. My local (50 yards away) most of the time I am the oldest there, Adnams Community Pub of the Year twice in 3 years. Packed with all ages on occasion. No themes, gimmicks etc. just well supported with enthusiastic Landlady and Obediant (!) hubby.

Seashoreman, you're right, I made a big generalisation based on local experience.
Glad to hear of someone who has a thriving pub to use, wish it were the same here!

Somebody not far away is due a slapping, can't think who, though
The fact is, that pubs only survive when the locals use them in high quantities to allow them to pay the bills to keep it open, sadly these days, too many people know it's cheaper to buy from a supermarket and drink at home. So I'm afraid where that happens, the local has to do something else to survive, which often means no more spit and sawdust type pub, which some prefer, but not often, enough
Our place was in terminal decline which showed from the records of the previous five years before we got here, so the hard part for us, is making the required changes slowly so as not to alienate those few who did like what it was, whilst encouraging more people to come in and try us out. The previous menu was typical microwave stuff, bought cheap and sold high, which people now realise isn't the best kind of food, and the locals got used to having rough beer, whilst new people could see how bad it was.
So we're changing as fast as we can, but daren't change too fast, even the food and wine, it's amazing what some still like. Liebfraumilch, even

Anyway, back to assisting, fag breaks over

A certain Inn in Aldeburgh decided last year to change the internal layout, what a disaster. It has just closed. Even in the depths of winter one could always find a crowd in there over the weekends, albeit mainly drinkers. In summer it would be packed with lunch time diners, after the refit there was no room for drinkers:cool:
I think greed ruled someone's head. Now the ex-regulars have found other far superior watering holes within the bounds of lovely Aldeburgh. I personally only visited once after the re-fit and could not get near the bar, so I walked! I suppose it all depends on what you want from a seaside watering hole. Purely a personal point of view.

Yes, that was the Mill. The best pub view in Aldeburgh, well used by the fishermen and lifeboatmen. Newish Landlord (with no experience) pestered Adnams into redesigning, completly ruined the charm of the old place, then started running out of beer, etc etc. No local trade all of a sudden!!
Ran it into the ground and left a few weeks ago. Adnams obviously wont change it back as it must of cost thousands to wreck it.
They had an 'open day' for prospective new tenants recently (a first time I believe) and nobody turned up. Wonder why?
