Up till now I've always been an Imray person, with their shiny water-resistant paper and fairly dark colours. However, I recently expanded my portfolio to include the Channel Islands, and decided to get the Admiralty leisure folio instead as it has more charts hence hopefully more detail.

Having arrived, they're certainly admirably detailed, but I'm rather disappointed with the printing. The colours seem much paler than I remember from using Admiralty charts on other people's boats, particularly the yellow of the land which is a very pale tint rather than the bold solid yellow. The paper feels like ordinary office printer paper (albeit a good quality one). The plastic wallet and the dark blue cover sheet seem exactly "right", though, so I don't think they're some kind of forgery.

Have the UKHO just changed their print standards for Leisure products in recent years? This is the 7th edition of SC 5604, from February this year. Note that it doesn't have the single blue contour and the coloured lights that were announced in the last couple of months.

They are phasing out the Leisure Folios, so I guess they don't really care.

Sorry, but could you please provide a source for that statement? I am genuinely puzzled as the UKHO has only recently issued what they call their "first edition" - "5616 Scotland - Point of Ardnamurchan to Shiant Islands: 1st Edition" That does not read like a series about to finish.

The colours and the paper quality of the new SC 5616 are fine, as is the plastic folder, although I prefer using these charts with a Combicover which fits them exactly - http://www.combico.nl/?p=ccover_home.

Earlier this year I asked them when they were going to do the crinkly bits round the top and they said :
There are no plans to produce chart folios for the North of Scotland and the Orkney and Shetland Islands. The UKHO stopped producing individual leisure charts some time ago and now only produces the folios shown on the our website
So the series has definitely finished :(

We were talking about folios though, which the statement says are continuing. It's the leisure charts that have stopped.

Lustyd is right; we are at cross purposes here. You (like, I believe, Nigel, above) are talking about the flimsy leisure charts and not the folio series on good quality paper in the plastic folders. I have three of the cheapo flimsies, and would never buy them again; they're just not up to the job, and it is no surprise to me that they are being phased out.

The folio editions are well printed and on quality paper, although I know that some have challenged this on other threads. Only last week I bought a folio series "first edition" for Ardnamurchan to the Shiants. UKHO would not have done that if they were being phased out, imho.

Mine isn't. At least, it looks rather different to the out of date edition of the same folio I inherited on the new boat.

Interestingly, both this and the other thread are specifically about the Channel Islands folio 5604. I wonder if there's something odd about that folio in particular?

(With you on the leisure chart / leisure folio confusion.)

I said Leisure Folios: a folio being a collection (of charts). What is the problem?

UKHO produces a specific range of leisure products, which THEY call "Leisure Folios". They are indeed each a collection of charts. They are not being phased out.

UKHO is phasing (has phased?) out individual leisure charts.

I am pretty sure it is indeed just the latest edition of SC5604 that suffers from the problem you describe. I have an earlier edition of that pack and also current and/or old editions of SC5600, SC5601 and SC5605. Also a number of the "old" leisure charts. All of these look like the proper job.

I saw the new edition of SC5604 at my local chandlers a week ago, but was disappointed by the printing - exactly as you observed.

Could they be counterfeit?

Nigel, I've read enough of your posts to know that internally you probably have the right answer but in this instance your words are letting you down. The individual leisure charts have been discontinued (the individual ones in Legal size packs), not the folios (the collections in A2 packs).

I'm only going on what I was told by the publisher 12 months ago: the A2 Leisure Folios are being phased out. You can still get the existing packs, but they are not expanding their range.

No, I am definitely talking about the folios. HMRC are public on the fact that the charts that make up the folios are not available individually any more and they told me they are never going to release a folio for the N of Scotland inc Shetlan Isles etc.

How long the existing folios will continue to be available is anyone's guess, but if it's cost cutting that's led to it then my guess is "not particularly long".
