Adding gas stove

Hello all

Could anyone give me an idea of what I would require, and perhaps an indicator of costs involved, in adding a gas cooker and stove to a boat. The space for a gimbled stove exists, but gas supply does not.

Obviously this will need to be a professional installation including gas alarms etc.

Assume a gas locker exists.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks
Charles

We are just having this done professionally and it is expensive. Because of the vessel design, she did not have a proper gas locker, so we had to sacrifice part of the lazarette and have one tailor made, v expensive for a GF covered wooden box, but it has been done properly.

The installation was almost the same cost again (with bubble tester and an electronic solenoid). The cost of the cooker was a small part of the total, so get a nice one. PM we with what details you need. We are recovering our composure and bank balance before moving on to the alarm but that is trivial in comparison.
I can give you some names for the Solent area.

Another site, http://www.boatsafetyscheme.com/site/GettheGuide_7.asp# esp parts seven and eight (LPG and Appliances, Flueing & Ventilation) may also be useful if the boat is or may be coming inland. Even if it's not coming inland you still may find the site useful.

Don't hesitate to contact the office or one our examiners directly if you need any further assistance relating to the Scheme's requirements re LPG and appliances
bss.enquiries@boatsafetyscheme.com or call on 01923 201278.

NB we always advocate chosing a stove fully fitted with Flame Supervision (Failure) Devices It's a much safer bet and as you're using a professional, a competent fitter will only install a stove with FSD/FFD fitted.

Good luck with the project.

how cheap is this boat??

with so many shortcomings it must be a real bargain!

one thing i can promise is that after a few weeks or months aboard you will want to change things again. you can think and plan the ideal boat but there's no substitute for trying things out before you undertake expensive modifications.

for example a quarterberth looks fine on a drawing but has many drawbacks- it usually ends up as a dumping space, it can be claustrophobic, you are directly below everyone's dripping oilies when on the lee side and worst of all it's a trap in the event of a fire.

Why not look at an Origo??? All you have to buy is the stove at £200, no gas installaiton etc. Ther is a version with an oven, no idea how much

Rob, I would like to belatedly welcome you to the forums. I can't believe that you haven't been inundated with questions.

One of my future tasks is to re-install a gas system after ripping it out because I didn't trust it. There is no way that I would take any short cuts with such a volitile fuel. My other task is to bring the diesel lines and engine up to BSS standards but I keep hearing that BSS keep changing the specs when they realise that they may be going over the top.

Does it make sense to put it through the test knowing that it's going to fail just to get a todo list?
