Afternoon

I wish to add AIS to my Targa as I don't currently have it and I think it will be a benefit BUT what's peoples views on just a reciever or a transceiver... For me would a reciever be sufficient or should I have both?

Some say that commercial shipping doesn't monitor class B anyway....
Around the Solent it is a waste of time, full stop. I only really use it around the shipping lanes, and only TX if I am way offshore or in poor visibility.

100% TX - from reviewing your passage to keeping friends up to date with your adventures and all the safety aspects in between - the best couple of hundred quid you can spend on electronics imho.

You can go dark if you’re smuggling but otherwise it’s very sensible - you will use the CPA feature often and other vessels will do the same. It’s nice to be called up by others who can see you and we’ve been asked for sea state and weather conditions several times by AIS contacts.....

If you are adding it then go for a transceiver. Useful fir finding out all sorts of interesting information about the big boats you are passing, where they are going where they have been, and family and friends can follow you on Marine Traffic! The huge benefit is, if you need to hit the wee red button the Coastguard have a lot of information about your passage.

Thanks for the help

After putting it like that its pretty clear cut and some great points.... as for the safety aspect its going to be worth the extra 100%

Thanks again

Ian

If you travelling with another boat AIS is handy to keep an eye on each others position and speed . It saves looking behind if you are the lead boat.
I did lose visual contact with another boat we were travelling with . AIS would have help save our concerns.
Also, as said , AIS transmission will almost certainly lead the rescue services to you. Even if the boat sinks the last position transmitted will be available to the rescuers.
Collision avoidance with ships is also a significant factor.
