AD31 Engine Oil Type

In my AD31P's I use 15W/40 semi synthetic, the manual says Mineral, semi or fully synthetic are all ok as longs as they meet the spec.

Loads of waffle talked about oils, at the end of the day I put in the best I can afford that meets the spec. It will depend on what was in there before but as I have had my engines since almost new I know the history, introducing Fully synthetic to an engine that has run on mineral oil for 00's of hours is probably not a good idea.

All true. Volvo states an API service class CD oil for it, a standard that is now obsolete.

Over time the standards are optimized and designated by alphabetical order. My oil-pusher now has a number of oils, both on mineral and synthetic bases, that cover wide ranges of viscosities and are recommended for both diesel and petrol engines.

All of these hold an API class of CF (and/or a number of brand specified standards from major manufacturers) so a specific CD oil is not available

I too would stay with the type you've used over time. Any hightech lube designed for modern engines might disappear through your else acceptable tolerances.

The light running oils' properties at extremely low temperatures most often are not relevant to marine engines.

Thanks guys. At least fully synthetic seems a no..

Chris, what made you decide that semi-synthetic was preferable to mineral?
