Ad blocker switched on - deeply sorry YBW

dunno

OK. You said:

What do you suggest? Adverts that nobody sees?

ah, now there you have identified the crux

if we could work that out then we would both be a bit wealthier than we are now

I do know that to place socking great bandwidth hungry and screen real estate annexing adverts up that encourage people to put adblockers on their browsers is not a particularly good plan

they just exusre that a diminishing number of people will see the adverts

youtube/google now makes money by putting in stream adverts on my films - which adblockers cannot block - at the moment

the display advert revenues are declining even on youtube

so....if you have a plan I am sure Mr Shead and that world famous tax minising company Google (0.18 per cent corporation tax) would love to hear it

over on sailnet everytime some-one types the word anchor a hotlink goes to Rocna, everytime some-one types the word rope it hotlinks to a marine chandler

not sure if that makes money either - it is pretty annoying as well

I don't have a plan, nor do I need one. You are the one who said YBW need to come up with a plan - are you able to suggest one for them?

None of the ads is visible with iPad, but the screen width assumes them to be visible. Some threads seem to have them but others don't, so the width of the forum jumps about, usually just as I am pressing 'see latest post', with the result that I either get 'rate this thread' or the previous page. I see that I, and a couple of others, have double posted since the ads were introduced, which was previously not possible unless you were particularly insistent.

I can see the ads on the iPad, in Chrome and in Safari for PC. I can't see them in Firefox or IE9. They are a bit of a pain on the iPad, but I tend not to use that to browse this forum. In a full-screen browser on a large (1650px) monitor the ads are not particulaly annoying anyway, but as IE9 is my default browser I generally don't see them.

curious

they were showing on my firefox until I added the ad blocker

Advertisers NEED to learn when they are annoying the pants off people.

I have never seen adverts on this site, nor many others. Not because I have any special advert blocking software, but because I have a browser that easilly allows you to "block content"

So whenever anything appears on my screen that annoys me, it gets blocked.

I haven't had to add anything to the blocked list for ages, meaning pretty much all advertising gets served up from the same relatively few servers.

But related to this, I was watching the F1 on German TV at the weekend (as it was one of the races the BBC were not showing live) and an advert break came on at in inopportune moment. I was really cursing that advert break, and quite apart from it was in German so I wasn't paying attention, if it had been in my native tongue, I would have been cursing the advertisers, and there's no way on earth in that situation that I would have been remotely interested in their adverts.

On the other hand, a discrete, non intrusive advert, might, just might, not get blocked and might be looked at.

What Ads?

I'm one of those that don't get any Ads - using Firefox. Whilst I don't use an Adblocker, I do use NoScript and this is nothing to do with YBW but something I've used for years. I have no objection to static advertising and see adverts on many sites I visit, but scripts are potentially dangerous and by default all sites I visit have scripts blocked. When I've determined the nature of the site I'm visiting, I will usually enable 1st party scripting for that domain in order for functionality like menu's etc to work. Sites that use 3rd party scripts however usually do so for e-commerce, dynamic advertising or malicious means. If it's the first, I can enable required domains and the latter two are of no consequence. If sites don't work without 3rd party scripting (some use a dozen or so 'partners') then I'll find an alternative supplier/site that does.

If YBW use static adverts served from their own domain then I'll see them, if they use a third party agency then they have no control over content/security and therefore this falls outside of my personal 'trust' settings and will be blocked. Ethical or not, I'm personally not about to change long standing security practice that has served me well for all the years I've worked in IT.

If you are using chrome, click on the three horizontal lines in the top right hand corner, click on tools, click on extensions, you should find adblocker there just enable it, works for me

I don't get a Tools option under the three bar menu, nor extensions. Do I have to sign in to Chrome to get them?

+1 and errrr... +1

I have no problem with adverts if that generates revenues, what irritated me was their randomness.. sometimes they'd be there and sometimes not, and in the meantime the size of the display window was jumping around while it decided what it wanted to do... made the"view last post"option jump from side to side.. make them slghtly smaller, and put them at either the top and/or bottom of the display where they are easier to navigate....

Perhaps this is the plan, I have see it used to great effect in other places:

1) Introduce something that causes users to stop using the service;

2) Blame the lack of users and close the service

3) Job done, not our fault guv, but as a result we have made a huge saving and the bean counters are happy.

as you say in your strap line

cynical....

however, no-one in their right mind would close a successful forum

they just need to find a way of levering some money from it without killing it

one of the things that I learned fairly fast with KTL is that lots of sailors like to live in peaceful places - many of which have terrible bandwidth

that is getting better but it was the amount of real estate that the adverts were taking and the fact that they never seemed to change

the self satisfied prozzie in the red dress was really starting to pish me off

I have seen much, much bigger things than a successful forum closed using this method Dylan!

I just hope "they" listen to their users/customers and re-think their funding model.

They may then worry they will have to close IPC because of the lack of readership !!

With so many threads and complaints about these adverts one would hope they are taking notice.
Either way they are on a loser with this. I get no adds so the advertisers wont be long in pulling there add
as it wont be paying. Those that cannot block the adds & find then intrusive will either leave or visit less,
hence the advertisers are again likely to pull out.

Oh what chaos we create when more money we set out to make :D
