Apologies to anyone having a look at a link that mysteriously appeared in my original posting #4 *I have now edited it out.

A bug has come in to my computer and has given links from some words I type in, to advertise rubbish - again, apologies.

p.s. anyone know how to stop it and to prevent pop-ups that now happen every few seconds?

S.

Do you have a good virus scanner / anti-spyware package installed? If not, assuming Windows:

1: Check you have Windows Defender installed and configured...
2: Spybot S&D Free Edition - http://www.safer-networking.org/mirrors/
3: Update (or better still disable) Java - there are a few issues with it at the moment.
4: Change any password you have used from that machine, including banking etc, they may have been compromised.

If you aren't comfortable with the above, take it to a local PC shop and ask them to virus scan and clean it for you.

Thanks for your kind comments all!

Scotty: The twizzle rig sounds good (as I vaguely understand it, you decouple the twin sails from the forestay?) but needs two poles and we just have one. The disadvantage of our rig is that gybing would be a serious hassle. We didn't need to though, we just headed slightly further south than we'd have liked at times!

Timmygobang: Yes, we know Oliver of Troskala well, and we're hoping to catch up with him soon!

Cliffdale: In retrospect, we think Biscay gets talked up a bit. It could be a nightmare in poor conditions, but the key is that it only takes two or three days, which should hopefully be well within a reliable forecast window if you can wait for good weather. I think it tends to be those with a deadline who get caught out! We got our worst weather from Portugal to Porto Santo (see blog) which is generally meant to be easy..but we were a bit late in the season.

A couple of books I found really useful in the planning stages (years!) are the aforementioned Ocean Cruising on a Budget by Anne Hammick, and Bluewater Countdown by Geoff Pack. Excellent, realistic guides to the practical questions which arise.

Excellent read and very inspirational to me and no doubt lots of others who fancy doing the same voyage - thanks very much.
