I seem to recall that it was called Agua Fuerte.

Muriatic acid is jolly good for cleaning stainless.

That was my understanding too, but Google seems to be telling me it could also be nitric acid.

Both historical names:

Muriatic Acid = Hydrochloric acid
Aqua Fortis = Nitric Acid solution, very corrosive to brass and copper

Carbonate scale forms in toilet pipework because bacterial action on traces of urine not flushed away produces ammonia.

Ammonia raises the pH

Sea water has high temporary hardness ... bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium.

raising the pH results in the formation of carbonates which is deposited as scale.

Hydrochloric acid reacts with carbonates to form soluble chlorides and carbon dioxide.

Currently weather bound in Camaret. The local Super U has acid on the shelf just above the litres of acetone - much cheaper than my wife's nail varnish!!!
