"Learn by doing" is probably the best way to learn or teach...obviously doing the thing can generate experience, so I don't think your definition is fully accurate. How would you define experience? The best one I know is "Learning something whilst doing something else". Experience does not always boost your confidence as I have known too many people talk of the years of experience they have, not just sailing but work as well. This might be 25 years experience in their eyes, but in reality it is one years experience 25 times. They never learn from their mistakes.
(I must admit that I sometimes refer to experience as something you get when looking for something else. But I think that is just in the sense of being a consolation prize)
confidence is not needed to go sailing alone...if you are brave enough to give it a try and you have some competance no reason why you cannot sail, eventually you will succeed in developing confidence or
When I was training it was referred as fake it till you make...walk in as if you had balls of iron...and unless you meet an x-ray machine or get groped your secret is just that...
also put a pen crossways in your mouth...it will make you smile and smiling makes you happy and happy makes you smile...?
