Now here is a thing.

If anyone saw the PBO item they might have noticed that last summer I was sporting a fine pottery.

Normally it increases in the Winter before a spring onslaught on the Ryvita. However, although I am a long way from being worryingly thin I have noticed that of late my trousers have been fitting me rather well.

I could not work it out because pie consumption this winter is no different from any other.

I have just made a film about sailing the Duck Punt in a strong breeze and Jill watched it and pointed out that it is not just the lugging the boat around and the paddling but all the time I am sailing I am doing ab crunches



who would have thought that an ab workout could be such fun

so there you go

- build a duck punt... sail it....get trim...

and be grudgingly admired by your wife

That's not an ab crunch...it's the eccentric phase of a lift, ie you're using your back muscles, not your abs.

You can't target weight loss at specific areas of the body anyway.

Phew......sorry about that....pedantic personal trainer mode now switched off.

I love the emergency tacking technique with the paddle! BTW not sure if it will work with your paddle/ boat but canoeists often use the paddle for stability when boarding. Place the paddle across the thwart, projecting as far as possible landward while still reaching the far side of the boat. Let the landward end of the blade rest on the bank, transfer your weight onto the paddle by sitting on it, then lift legs into boat & transfer weight from paddle to boat using your hands on the paddle to support your weight as you do so.

Really awkward to describe but dead simple to do. Canoes often board in water just too shallow to float with paddler aboard, then place paddle blade on ground behind & lift & push to launch. Sometimes a hand on the opposite side to the paddle will help lift you forward.

Or there is the "seal launch" down a muddy or grassy bank where you get in on land & gently rock forward to slide down into the water. You may need a foredeck to get away with that tho! But a canvas cover might be enough to stop you actually sinking when the bow goes under.

Sitting and paddling the punt will be using your abs. As she is constantly heeling and pitching, you'll also be getting a bit of a general 'core' workout...so, don't get me wrong..... it's all good, worthwhile, exercise (I know that's not why you do it though).

What do you get for £200?....hmmm... is that my place or yours, dearie? Group session or one on one?

it is the way they all seem to tack them - three strokes and quick flick over your head and you are on the other tack.

As for launching - the flat bottom makes it much more stable than any canoe I have ever been in - step into the middle and off I go.

Not sure the paddle technique will work with the short paddle - but it might with the double. I shall try it. As for sliding down banks....not for me

If you don't mind me saying Dylan, you look a little, erm, anxious in the video:):) Maybe it's the burning of nervous energy that's doing it for the abs:D

No fear. The bank is only five yards away and the camera is waterproof and firmly attached to the boat.

A bit of adrenalin - no-one wants to lose against the wind. As you can see it is flukey stuff that close to the water.

I did get treed three times - once so thoroughly that I had to drop the mast to paddle out.

I have a pretty good bloopers reel forming now.

might make that a subscription only film

anyway - were the edits good enough to make you forget the joins

and did anyone watch it downloaded and full screen

I watched it streaming, rather than downloaded (I think that's the correct lingo), but I did watch it full screen on a rather large screen.

It was: charming, calming, inspirational............

what you can do to se it full blatt is to download the hd version and then play it through a media player rather than a browser

it should look better.

It is a lovely little thing to sail

although I hear dark murmerings from the deepest saltmarsh rills that the boat is being regarded as a bit of a travesty

wrong sail, wrong colour, wrong wood - and therefore has few redeeming features

but I wanted it to be light enough to car top on the polo and making it out of floorboards would have made it a bit heavy
