\"About Blank\" Computer Bug

Any advice on how to get rid of "About Blank" computer infestation? Have tried several "free" removal sites which end up with a request for payment with no guarantees. I suspect one of the removal sites is the one that infected my laptop.

First of all try AVG virus software, there is a free version that receives free regular updates, and wont infect your computer. WHat it will do is give you a good diagnosis of the problems you may currently have, and maybe able to remove them. They do also offer a commercial version for a reasonable fee, not sure if you will need that or not to solve your problem, but start with the free version, its good honest software, and the best free virus scanner you will find.

Peter, once you've run avg and spybot etc, then go to Webuser (It's an IPC sister site to ybw for computing, so quite safe) and read this page for instructions then download and run Hijackthis.

http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/358300/an/0/page/0#358300

After you have followed the instructions to create a log, post the log here

http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/postlist.php/Cat/0/Board/hijackthis

An expert will examine the log, for evidence of any remaining infections, and give you instructions on how to remove them, or pronounce you all clear.

Many thanks for responses. Will try them all. I dont want to be mean but do not trust some of the removal offers I found on the web up to now.

A good site for advice on PC problems that I have used are the forums at www.vnunet.com . I believe it is connected with the Computeractive magazine.

Avast provide free pc protection and I have use it for a number of years now and personally think it much better than Norton or the other premium software providers. Its easy to locate and download the software.

I agree that Spybot S&D is very good and free to boot.

When you've got rid of the viruses, configure a user on Windows XP with 'Limited' permissions and use this to browse the web. This stops the viruses/trojans getting on your PC in the first place because they can't install themselves.
