The boat has been fully winterised and I'm just wondering whether the toilet should be left with a small amount of fresh water in the bowl to keep the seal wet or flush it and therefore allow it to dry out. Can the seal at the base of the bowl be lubricated with anything? A downside of leaving water in the bowl would be the possible a build up of limescale.

Flush through a pint or two of vinegar, then a few gallons of fresh water. Then run through a fairly concentrated mixture of washing up liquid and water, then pump dry. Clean, no smells or limescale and lubricated seals.

On the grounds that you never can get all of the water out when pumping dry I always run an antifreeze mix through mine as part of winterising. Likewise sink and basin wastes and shower drain/pump.

Thanks for both of your replies.......I have fully winterised the toilet system and I'm wondering specifically whether a small amount of fresh water should be left in the bowl over the winter to keep the seal wet? The head is heated so freezing is not a problem. If I dry the bowl should I lubricate the rubber seal at the bottom to stop it becoming rigid and ineffective?

Yes, as noted with washing up liquid.

Lubricate by pouring some cooking oil into the bowl and flushing. I try to avoid putting detergents and surfactants down my heads.

Before before flushing oil, pour some white vinegar into the bowl and do a partial flush and leave for 24 hours. It removes lime-scale and deodorizes the system.

Major, does the vinegar go in undiluted?

Well, it'll be diluted by any water left in the system. But essentially yes. Just pour in. Do a partial pump to get round the pipes and then flush out the next day. Urine contains a calcium and it builds up if the heads are used regularly. The vinegar dissolves it.
